Overview

About the Mexican Silver Libertad

The Libertad is Mexico's silver bullion coin, struck in .999 fine silver. Its mintages are usually much smaller than those of the Silver Eagle or Maple Leaf, which can lift its premium over spot.

It comes in an unusually wide range of sizes, from 1/20 oz up to a kilo, and some collectors buy every size each year.

For background on the metal itself, see our silver guide.

Watch out for

What to check when buying

  • Plated copies. Silver-plated fakes of popular sizes exist. Check weight and size, and buy from established dealers.
  • Premiums vary by year. Low-mintage years can sell well above other years. That's collector demand, not extra silver.

IRA eligibility
